What is SFP+ DAC and the Benefits of It?

SFP+ direct attach cable (DAC) is a fixed assembly that is purchased at a given length, typically 1 to 7 m (passive cables) or up to 15 m (active cables) in length, with the SFP+ connector modules permanently attached to each end of the cable. SFP+ DAC provides high performance in 10 Gigabit Ethernet network applications, using an enhanced SFP+ connector to send 10 Gbps data through one paired transmitters and receivers over a thin twinax cable or fiber optic cable. The 10G SFP+ DAC is designed to use the same port as an optical transceiver, but compared with optical transceivers, the connector modules attached to the cable leave out the expensive optical lasers and other electronic components, thus achieving significant cost savings and power savings in short reach applications with low-power, low-cost and low-latency with the added advantages of using less bulky cables and of having the small form factor of SFP+. SFP+ Direct Attach today is tremendously popular, with more ports installed than 10GBASE-SR.

What types of DAC - cables ?

Direct attach active optical cables, or active optical cables for short, are direct-attach fiber assemblies with optical transceiver (SFP+, XFP, QSFP+, CXP etc.) connectors.

SFP Cables

SFP Cables provide interconnection among switches, servers and routers with 1.25GbE SFP connectors to the fiber Channel PCI Cards. They can also be used to connect the RAIDS with SFP connectors to most 2G and 4G Fiber Channel Switches. It s for Gigabit Ethernet and 1x/2x/4x Fiber Channel communications. There are available cost effective 1GbE ~ 4 GbE SFP Direct Attach Passive Copper Cables in different length, 0.5m, 1m, 2m, 3m or you can customize cable length to meet your requirement. The Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) interface, also known as Mini-GBIC, supports a variety of communications standards including Fiber Channel, Gigabit Ethernet (GBE), and SONET.

10G XFP Cables

10G XFP Cables were developed to provide 10Gb/s serial links for a wide range of applications including standards such as G.709, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 10G Fiber Channel, and other industry standards.  It is ideally suited for 10 GbE datacom and storage area network applications based on the IEEE 802.3ae and Fiber Channel standards. It directly attached twin-axial cable assemblies and offer a highly cost-effective way to connect within racks and across adjacent racks. It can be customized over distances of up to 15 meters, to customer requirement.

CX4 CABLES

CX4 Cables promise to provide the fastest transfer rates available for copper cables. The CX4 architecture specification defines a connection between processor nodes and high performance I/O nodes, such as storage devices. CX4 offers point-to-point bidirectional serial links intended for the connection of processors with high-speed peripherals such as disks. It combines low cost cables and equipment with high speed for short distance connections, and supports several signaling rates and as with PCI Express, links can be bonded together for additional throughput.

Advantages:

  • highest density pluggable interconnect supporting up to 150 Gb/s per port
  • Small bend radius for easy installation and fiber management
  • Low power consumption and weight for high port count architectures
  • Based on InfiniBand Trade Associations (IBTA) CXP form factor

10G SFP+ CABLES

The passive SFP+ cables, active SFP+ cables and SFP+ active optical cables are providing a wide variety of ethernet connectivity options.  The 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity options for data center, enterprise wiring closet and service provider transport applications, such as switches, routers, media converter, and other data communication equipments. These cables comply with the latest IEEE and MSA standards for twin-axial cable patch cord assemblies over distances of up to 15 meters.

QSFP+ CABLES

QSFP (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable) connector, cage and cable assemblies are designed to meet emerging data center and high performance computing application needs for a high density cabling interconnect system capable of delivering aggregate data bandwidths of 40Gb/s & 56 Gb/s & 112 Gb/s. This interconnect system is fully compliant with existing industry standard specifications such as the QSFP MSA and IBTA (InfiniBand Trade Association). The QSFP cables support the bandwidth transmission requirements as defined by IEEE 802.3ba (40 Gb/s) and IEEE 802.3bj (100 Gb/s) and Infiniband QDR ( 4x10 Gb/s per channel) and FDR ( 4x14 Gb/s per channel) and proposed EDR ( 4x28 Gb/s per channel) specifications. The 40-Gigabit link between QSFP+ ports of QSFP+ switches within racks and across adjacent racks. These cables have lengths up to 20m and also can be customized for an ultra-high performance, cost effective cable solution in 40-Gigabit speed applications including switched fabric I/O, switches, routers, data storage arrays, and high performance computer (HPC) clusters.

Breakout Cables

Breakout cable contains multiple individual fibers each with its own aramid strength member and jacket while distribution cable contains multiple individual fibers with only a single aramid strength member around all the fibers.
