As technology moves forward fiber optic networks become crucial part of everyday business. They provide high speed and long distance connections. Fiber optic components are manufactured by many different manufacturers and they are compatible with each other. Direct Attach Cables are a big part of fiber optic networks. They are a form of a high speed cable with a Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP+) transceiver attached on each end. They are mostly used for providing connectivity between switches, routers and servers. Direct Attach Cables popularity grows from day to day mainly because they are a lot cheaper than standard optics. A very important fact about these cables is their electromagnetic interference shielding. This shielding protects the cable from attenuation and it is written on the cable itself in the form of AWG rating.

Direct Attach Cables can be found both passive and active. The difference between them is the fact that active cables include more advanced electronics inside which amplify the output signal. Thus you can reach longer distances with active cables. Passive cables on the other hand are used for connectivity up to 10 meters at most because they don’t have an amplifier in them.

As the demand for higher bandwidth grows IT leaders started upgrading their network to 10GB and 40GB Ethernet. For this reason Direct Attach Cables are very popular as they are a cost-effective solution for upgrade. When it comes to 10GB Ethernet you can choose a couple of Direct Attach Cables. These cables together with their properties are listed below:

  • SC353502JXM30 (figure 1) - This is a 10G, SFP+, active Direct Attach Cable. It has a reach capability up to 5 meters and the AWG rating is 30. It supports 10G Ethernet, 10G Fibre Channel over Ethernet, 8G&10G Fibre Channel and InfiniBand.
  • SC353501JXM30 (figure 2) – This is a 10G, SFP+, passive Direct Attach Cable. It has the same reach capability, up to 5 meters and an AWG rating of 30. It supports the same technologies as the previous cable, 10G Ethernet, 10G Fibre Channel over Ethernet, 8G&10G Fibre Channel and InfiniBand. It has a power consumption of 0.1 watts.

  • SC353501JXM28 (figure 3) – This is a 10G, SFP+, Direct Attach Cable with reach capability up to 7 meters. It is a passive cable and it has a lower AWG rating when compared with the previous cables, AWG28. This particular cable provides a SFP+ to SFP+ connection.
  • SC353501JXM24 (figure 4) – This cable is a 10G, SFP+ to SFP+ Direct Attach Cables with reach capability of up to 10 meters. It is a passive cable with AWG24 shielding.
  • SC353502JXM28 (figure 5) – This is a SFP+ to SFP+ active optical cable. Due to the advanced electronics this cable has a reach capability of up to 15 meters. It provides low latency and high signal integrity. It is an AWG28 rated for EMI protection.
  • SC353502JXM24 (figure 6) – This is a SFP+ to SFP+ active Direct Attach Cable with reach capability up to 15 meters. It has an AWG 24 shielding and a low power consumption of only 0.1 watts. It is an optimal solution for fast and flexible network infrastructures.
