The development is part and parcel of life and the life of technology as well. The addition of 5G will also be a part of the change and development. However, with the development of 5G, it is foreseen that the 5G will replace the ubiquitous 4G network that is currently in use. With the higher speed, low latency, the 5G will be generous support to the comprehensive infrastructure for M2M communications & IoT. It will support the high density of mobile users and would help to improve the bandwidth speed and basically will give a great boost to the entire bandwidth structure.

However, as the 5G networking is going forward, it will indeed have a prominent impact on the optical networking industry. As networking has to be done using fiber optics only! Moreover, as networking is entirely based on fiber optics, the gates of many new opportunities for the entire optical market will get open.

Revolution of 5G Leads To The Growth Of 25G/50G/100G/200G/400G Transceivers & IC Chips

When the 5G is on the wage to develop, it would replace the entire constructed system of the 4G and reconstruct it. The 4G has the baseband unit (BBU), remote radio unit (RRU), and an antenna, which makes clear that 4G has backhaul and fronthaul. While when 5G is here, 5G will reconstruct the 4G baseband unit (BBU), remote radio unit (RRU), and antenna into the centralized unit (CU), distributed unit (DU), and active antenna unit (AAU). This concludes that the 5G network will involve fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul, all the three.

Having this very clear, that the 5G is going to be faster, faster, will have the high rate of data transmission and more alike things, to keep the networking of 5G at the best place, fiber optic connectivity is one of the most essential and crucial parts of the 5G architecture. The change to 5G has put forward many new demands for the optical transceivers, cables, IC chips, and other things used in networking. So, the 5G has not only given a boost to the internet and high-bandwidth signals, but it has boomed the market of this optics and has created a whole new market for the same too.

For 5G Fronthaul: 25G/100G Transceivers (25G Will Dominate)

Based on the higher-base station density, and with the outbreak of the traffic on the networks, the demand for higher-bandwidth networking was there in the market. Keeping the demand in mind, the 5G technology was introduced. So, now as there is the evolution of the 5G technology, and now as the requirements of the same in the market are higher, there will be a new demand for the high-rate optical transceivers

As the LTE base station of 4G uses the 10G optical transceivers, it is now believed that the 5G optical fronthaul network that uses 25G/100G optical transceivers will now be the solution for the 5G optical fronthaul network in the future.

In fact, EJL Wireless Research forecasts that revenues for the fronthaul OTRX module market will reach $630 million by 2021, driven by volume shipments of 25G and 100G OTRX solutions in support of massive MIMO 5G networks.

So, you see, the enhanced Common Public Radio Interface (eCPRI), which is an interface that transmits the data from remote radio units to the base station. As the base protocol (typical rate 25.16Gb/s) is used to transmit the 5G base stations signal, the 5G will surely rely upon the 25G optical transceiver

However, to get the infrastructure and the system of the 5G ready to fuel-up the transition to the 5G, the optical module market of 5G is anticipated to reach 2 million demand count in 2021.

If we come to the application, the 5G AAU will be applied all in the outdoors. The 25G models that will be installed in the front haul network need to meet the industrial temperature and other environmental conditions. So, as these modules are designed well to resist such outdoor environmental conditions, they are installed at all the places according to the requirements.

Coming to 100G optical transceivers! The 100G optical transceivers are also seen as the solution for the fronthaul network. Now, they are used at the places where the requirement of a swifter and faster network is required. The 100G transceivers together in the year 2019 were used with 25G modules for the commercial applications for 5G services. Now, 100G was used at a place precisely where more demand for speed was there. They are not used at all the places and for the general 5G infrastructure.

Therefore at the top, we mentioned, the 25G will dominate. Because 25G is used mainly for the infrastructure of the 5G networking!

50G PAM4 Optical Transceivers For 5G Midhaul

The 5G requires optical transceivers at 50Gbit/s. Now, as there is the requirement of 50Gbit/s, the grey and colour optical transceivers deployment will have to be adopted. The grey light modules are suitable for the point-to-point direct network connection for the fiber optics due to it being a rich fiber resource. On the other side, the 25G colour light modules Passive WDM and Active WDM/OTN networks are used. Now, the 25G colour light is used here, as it can provide many AAU to DU connections on the usage of only one optical fiber.

With the usage of both grey and colour optical transceivers, 50G PAM4 QSFP28 transceiver, with the LC (Lucent Connector) optical interfaces and the single-mode optical fiber will be the core of the 5G midhaul. It will be a core because, over this, the bandwidth gets doubled over a single-fiber link, without having the need to install the filters for wavelength multiplexing. The demand for the 50G is here because the construction of the 5G will be load-filled. And to bear that load, the 50G PAM4 will surely be a kind of mainstream for the 5G midhaul.

100G/200G/400G Optical Transceivers for 5G Backhaul: 100G Is A Must

As the 5G network is the upcoming replacement of the 4G, the traffic which 5G will have to carry will be much more than that of the 4G, due to the higher bandwidth of 5G NRs (New radios).
So, as there is the burst and boom in the traffic, the backhaul layer of the 5G network requires 100Gb/s, 200Gb/s, and the 400Gb/s rate DWDM colour light modules.
For the access and aggregation layer, the 100G PAM4 DWDM transceivers will be mainly deployed, which will support the 60km with shared T-DCM and optical amplification.
For the extended kilometres transmission of the data, that is, to 80Km or more, the 100G/200G/400G coherent DWDM transceivers are needed for the support of the metro core DWDM network.
So, now, as the requirement of the 100G, optical transceivers for the 5G network is getting higher day-by-day, the service providers will have to get the 200G and 400G bandwidth to make the successful deployment of the 5G.

So, now as the demand for optic transceivers is growing, the market of the same as well in the near future will get to see a boom.

IC Chipsets For Optical Transceivers: Heading Towards a Higher Growth

Well, the chipsets are used in all the transceivers. And as there is the greater deployment of 50GbE, 100GbE, 200GbE, 2x200GbE, 400GbE, and 2x400GbE transceivers with PAM4 DSP chipsets used in the 5G midhaul and backhaul networks, the demand of the same is seeing the higher rise. The chipset is used in all the transceivers, so, the half growth and application of this optics’ market will be related to the PAM4 DSP chips.

Fiber Cable & Structured Cabling Markets Experience Growth With 5G Evolution

To deploy networking, the transceivers, nodes, and many more types of equipment are required. However, to connect the entire infrastructure, from micro base stations to the edge node, cables are required. So, the demand for the fiber cables is there in abundance to put-up the infrastructure of the 5G, aptly. As the fiber cables provide the speed, scalability, a lot of security, the ability to handle a vast amount of traffic with lower attenuations, and offers unlimited bandwidth potential, they are the only ones that are being used for the 5G network pavement.

The network, as is being spread all around, the cables for the same are also used in bulk. So the fiber cables and structure cabling market sees a growth too since the 5G is on the evolution spree.

5G Boosts Demand For Fiber Optic Test Equipment

Everything that has to be deployed on the higher and a bigger level will never be deployed without passing through the tests and trails. Similarly, when the 5G is being deployed, the performance of the cables has to be tested as well to see if the performance is up to the mark or not. So, for this, the Fiber Optic test equipment is critical to be used, and they will go higher in demand too.

The testing will help the operators and suppliers of the equipment as well. The tests will benefit the operators because they will know if the fiber is working suitably or not. With the help of the tests, the supplier will be able to validate their hardware and software that they perform well and as expected.

Endnote

So you see, with the revolution of 5G, the trend of optical products has grown a lot. With the 5G drive, not only the bandwidth and high speed network will be delivered to the users, but the market of the optics products will get many benefits too. With the benefits to the market, many opportunities will get open for a lot of people, vendors, network providers, and others.
