With the passing time, technology has outgrown a lot. As technology has got a great push, the demand for high-speed interconnection has accelerated too. To get the high speed of the data transfer with the high quality, the data centres to support the higher density and higher bandwidth networking need to have optical transceivers. The QSFP being the optical transceiver is the solution for high-speed data communications. As the QSFP helps to transfer the data in a zippy way, the data centres out there require the same so that they can rail every channel with the top data transfer rate. Now, as the data centre’s requirements have been changed and the need for the high-speed transceiver was there, there has been a turbo evolution in the generations of the QSFPs in less than a decade’s time. So, let’s read about all the QSFPs’ generations and also about the latest generation of QSFP that is QSFP56.

About QSFP
A compact, hot-pluggable transceiver that is (Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable) QSFP is used by many of the vendors that create the networking. It is a small compact device that you can plug in the media converters, OLT GPON, OLT EPON, computers, servers, and other similar communication systems that are meant to create networking. So, as there has been an upgrade in the technology of the QSFPs, there are different generations of the same that has come into being as well, which we can discuss. There are QSFP, QSFP28, QSFP56, and QSFP56-DD. All these QSFPs share the same package form but have a different transmitting rate.

The QSFP was the very first generation of the QSFPs series. It is suitable for 40G data communications applications. It is the quad (4-channel) small form-factor pluggable optics transceiver. In this, every channel gets the data transmission rate of 10G. This QSFP came into being in the year 2013, when the digitalization, data transmission of high-quality with high quality was just getting fame. So, when this QSFP was made, the data transmission did only get easy, but it also got faster.

About QSFP28
This QSFP28 has the capability to transfer the data of 100G. As their postfix suggests, they can share the data of 28G to each of the four channels. However, it depends; you can get the 4x25Gbps breakout connections, 2x50G, and 1x100G as well. It will rely on the transceiver you use. This QSFP28 came into the market in the year 2016. It has the NRZ modulation.

About QSFP56
Now is the time when people have smart TVs, home theatres, and they want the picture quality to be the best without having that buffering circle rotating all the time, with smooth quality and clear HD pixels. Also, the data centres are struggling to bug-up with the requirement of the speed and other things. So, seeing the requirements of people and the data centres needs, the QSFP56 was created.

The QSFP56 is a solution to the 200G application. The size of the QSFP and QSFP56 is not at all different, they are more of the same size and have the same package form, but this QSFP56 has a very higher rate of data transmission. In fact, QSFP56 has the highest data transmission rate of 50GB/s for each channel. This transceiver has the PAM4 modulation. Alongside this, it has been forecasted by the communications specialists that the QSFPs might make the advancement on the ungraded network switches, with the double density of their front panel, which will accelerate the network throughput.

In contemporary times, this transceiver is used at most of the places, above any other transceiver, as they are compatible enough for a maximum of the networking vendors.
Also, it is sure that this QSFP56 will be competitive enough with the next-generation network switches as well.

About QSFP56-DD
The infix of DD that is placed after the QSFP56-DD stands for the double-density. This system would support the Ethernet applications of 200Gbps and 400Gbs as well. This transceiver has the capability to support the eight channels. It would support eight channels with 25Gb/s NRZ modulation and supports four channels with the 50Gb/s PAM4 modulation. You can change the modulation according to the choice and the requirements to get sustainable service.

These transceivers are generally used at the data centre or the networking centres where there is the requirement to establish a giant networking centre.

Conclusion
So, here was the evolution of the QSFPs.

As the traffic has grown for the data centres and service providers, they require the turbo data transmission interfaces to cope with the market and the demands. So, adopting the latest QSFPs, that is, QSFP56 and QSFP56-DD, is a necessity for them. As the previously mentioned QSFPs are the latest transceivers and provide the high-speed stringing of the data, they are reliable. Also, they keep the ability to compliment the next generation networking switches. Since the latest system always becomes the trend, having them will not only open the door for entering the trending market, but it will also make the investment and application worthy for a long while.
