For providing a stable, fast and scalable optical network, choosing and deploying the correct optical equipment is one of the main challenges. We always need to be aware of what would be needed for our applications to work seamlessly. When it comes to optical transceivers, choosing the correct one may be the hardest part due to the many manufacturers out there. However, there are some tips on this matter:

    • Always be aware of which fiber mode is required, Multi-mode or Single-mode. Generally, Multi-mode fibers are used for short range connections most commonly in Local Area Networks (LAN), and Single-mode fibers are used for long range connections most commonly in Datacenters and Service Providers.
    • Determine if full-duplex or half-duplex is needed. Some transceivers only work in full-duplex mode and deploying these with a half-duplex equipment like switches and hubs will cause conflict and most probably loss in packets. It is highly advisable to always use full-duplex mode and equipment.
    • Check the temperature adaptability of the transceivers. This is a very important note considered it is very often a forgotten characteristic of the transceiver. Keep in mind that optical transceivers shouldn’t run hot and will fail prematurely at high temperatures.
    • Determine if copper or optical fiber is the way to go
    • Always consider purchasing OEM transceivers for better reliability and stability

Among the many manufacturers offering networking equipment on the market, only a few stand out of the crowd: HP (Hewlett Packard), Cisco, Juniper, ZTE, Ericsson, Huawei etc. HP Enterprise or Hewlett Packard offers a wide variety of networking equipment suitable for Datacenters, Service Providers and big enterprise users. They concentrate on high quality and expandability. Their constant growth and strong success is a guarantee of quality and dependability.

HPE transceivers offer a unique feature called “wire once” which provides simplicity for networking and storage interfaces. Three of their most used, and fairly similar, transceivers are: J9150A, JD092B and 455883-B21:

The HPE J9150A SFP+ offers a 10 Gigabit Ethernet, up to 300 meters connectivity over Multi-mode fibers. It supports the 10GBASE-SR standard. It is proven as a simple, reliable and robust optical receiver mainly used in HP switches, routers and storage systems. This optical transceiver has the option of LC and UPC connectors. It has a maximum operation temperature of +70 degrees Celsius and can also operate ate 0 degrees Celsius.

Just like the J9150A SFP+, HPE JD092B SFP+ Transceiver offers a 10 Gigabit Ethernet solutions. It supports the 10GBASE-SR standard with distance capability of up to 400 meters on OM4 Multi-mode fibers. It provides a stable 850nm wavelength enough for a maximum performance short range connection. This transceiver comes with a LC connector. Using this transceiver will provide a reliable performance, allowing the business to expand their networks to remote segments cost-effectively. This transceiver is optimally used with HP A5830AF, HPE 12504, 5120, 5500, 5810, 5900AF, 5920AF.

The HPE 455883-B21 SFP+ Transceiver is a transceiver with two LC type connectors. It is a plug-in module that supports the 10GBASE-SR standard and has a distance capability of up to 984ft. or 300 meters. This transceiver is mainly used with HPE D2D4324, BLc3000 Enclosure and ProLiant DL360p Gen8 systems.

Depending on the network project, the type of the network architecture and the equipment used, choosing HP Enterprise transceivers will always offer high quality, maximum performance for deploying them mainly in cloud computing and HP storage solutions.
