IEE802 Group

IEEE 802.3 is a working group and a collection of IEEE standards produced by the working group defining the physical layer and data link layer's media access control (MAC) of wired Ethernet. This is generally a local area network technology with some wide area network applications. Physical connections are made between nodes and/or infrastructure devices (hubs, switches, routers) by various types of copper or fiber cable.

Gigabit Ethernet

The term describes the technologies used to transmit 1 million bits per second (1Gbps) as described by IEEE 802.3-2008 standard. Transmission can be made over copper or fibres and half - duplex or full duplex. The half duplex transmission does not present any more interest in developing being considered an obsolete way.

Initial IEEE standard was developed for fiber mediums: IEE802.3z. It was so called 1000BASE-X.

Gigabit over Copper -1000BASE-T

IEEE 802.3ab, ratified in 1999, defines Gigabit Ethernet transmission over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) category 5, 5e or 6 cabling, and became known as 1000BASE-T. With the ratification of 802.3ab, Gigabit Ethernet became accessible to end users through mass distribution and implementation of computers NIC’s (Network Interface Cards) with RJ45 connector and supporting 1Gbps.

Automatic MDI/MDI-X Configuration is specified as an optional feature in the 1000BASE-T standard, meaning that straight-through cables will often work between gigabit-capable interfaces. This feature eliminates the need for crossover cables, making obsolete the uplink/normal ports and manual selector switches found on many older hubs and switches and greatly reduces installation errors.

Gigabit over Fibre - 1000BASE-X

Transmission over optical fibre is generically summarized in IEEE 802.3z standard. As we have multimode fibres and singlemode fibres consequently we have 1000BASE-SX and 1000BASE-LX.

The form factors used in transporting Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel is the so called Gbic interface the 2000s. This hot-swappable module become obsolete after the rise of the smaller form of the transceiver: the SFP -small Form Factor Transceiver.

1 and 2.5 Gbit/s SFP

1 Gbit/s for copper twisted pair cabling, 8P8C (RJ-45) connector 1000BASE-T - these modules incorporate significant interface circuitry and can only be used for gigabit Ethernet, as that is the interface they implement. They are not compatible with (or rather: do not have equivalents for) Fiber channel or SONET. Unlike non-SFP, copper 1000BASE-T ports integrated into most routers and switches, 1000BASE-T SFPs usually cannot operate at 100BASE-TX speeds.

100 Mbit/s copper and optical - some vendors have shipped 100 Mbit/s limited SFPs for fiber to the home applications and drop-in replacement of legacy 100BASE-FX circuits. These are relatively uncommon and can be easily confused with 1 Gbit/s SFPs.
