800G Launch Will Push The Boundaries Of Network Speed

It was not long back when the OFC 2020 conference took place in San Diego, which was focused entirely on the 800G, the future of fibre optics, and making the 800G Ethernet a new bookmark in networking. After a short time when it was discussed, it was brought on the stage very soon, in Arpirl’2020. After the Ethernet Technology Consortium has launched 800G, it has been tested and proven in real production networks with Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme.

So, the wait is already over, and the 800G is here for real.

Compared to the 200G and 400G, 800G is the latest and provides very high-speed data transmission. As lately 400G was the hotspot of the networking, 800G will surely get a staple in the market and soon be a new hotspot, as there are no fewer people who require the high-speed network. If we talk about who requires the 800G speed in the world, then the answer to it is MANY!

The answer here is many because the 800G is not only used for the shorter distances, for the single-carrier 800GBPS throughput. But if there is a user of 800G, they can make their entire network infrastructure with it. See how! The capacity of data per wavelength it can take for all network paths are 600GBPS to 1K Km links, 400GPBS to the routes that are ultra-long-haul, and 200GBPS to trans-Pacific compensated cables. So, you see, this advancement of 400G to 800G is not only for the short distance data transfer, but it can be used to create a stronger networking infrastructure for long-long distances. As almost every data center requires this strong programmable coherent optical technology to extend their network reach, this 800G network was also created to feed the data centers that are hungrier and need a technology that can transfer billions of bits in just seconds. Let’s see what 800G means for the networking provider vendors and which network needs this.

What Does 800G Mean To Network Providers?

Any user who is or will be using the 800G will see a reduction in power, footprint, and transport costs with fewer wavelengths to deploy and manage all the things. They can extend the network for the DCI, that is, smaller distances, long haul ways, or we can say, they can extend the network within the city, across the cities, and can be used for the ultra-haul distances as well, that is to transmit data submarines. Moreover, as the QSFP-DD800 brings in the 800G optical transceiver hardware specification, it says that QSFP-DD800 can connect eight high-speed electrical interfaces connecting lines to the host, in which each lane is 100G/s. Now the most amazing thing about this device is, the QSFP-DD800 is compatible with QSFP-DD or other QSFP modules, including QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP56, and 400G QSFP-DD. When the hardware is deployed easily with these previous devices, it has tremendous commercial and operational advantages for the network operators, are very cost-effective, and easy for them to switch to the latest technology.

Now, as we discussed above as well, which of the networks require the 800G, and we answered MANY. Let’s see which all are included in this many.

The Networks That Need 800G

MSO Networks - The MSO (multiple-system operator) are the operators who operate multiple cable or direct-broadcast satellite television systems. They would require the 800G network service as they are one of the top service providers, and they would want to serve their users with the best possible user experience. The user experience can be best only when the datas highest capacity is also transferred with excellent speed. To enhance the user’s experience and serve them better, the 800G is required.

Networks Of Submarine - There are troops of the Navy, ships for transportation, and ships on the sea for many other purposes, for which we need to have telecommunication all the time. So, to establish the network on the sea, there are many set-ups which are done. Therefore, to set-up, the same heavy backing of the network is required with the double capacity wavelength in all network links. To get the double density network and to stretch the network very strongly, the 800G can work in the best way.

R&E Networks - The R&E network is not there to provide any commercial internet service. But, the R&E network serves a bigger purpose. The R&E network is used in the research and educational institutes and universities. It supports the entire research process and education as well, so, has to be ultra-fast. Though it is used nationally, they connect globally. Thus, as they need to operate heavy sites, astronomy research, subatomic physics, serve many students with many different tabs open all the time, and researchers with all their studies, the network has to be wealthy. Consequently, 800G can serve best here.

Network Service Provider -  The network service providers sell the network or bandwidth access. They are called the backbone providers of internet providers. They give the network access points access to them as well. These companies can be telecommunication, wireless communication providers, internet service providers, cable television operators, and others. As these companies require massive internet access to provide the services to the end-users, they take the service of the internet from network service providers. Thus, for these reasons, network service providers are called the backbone of networking. However, to keep the backbone upright and ensure that the network providers can support internet providers in the best way, they undoubtedly require the 800G network. Only when the networks support to the network service providers will be heavy and appropriate can the NSP serve the others best.

Endnote

The launch of 800G and the use of the same, though it has been done only by one company, 800G will surely be in trend in no more than 3-4 years. It will be a trend not only because it’s the latest technology, and everybody wants to use the same, but also because, having this will become the requirement, as the traffic has been evolving and growing ever since.
