Fan-out Technology in 40G Data Center

The migration from 10G to 40G has begun with the requirement of high-speed Ethernet in data centers. Cloud services, multimedia downloads and uploads, video streaming and wireless usage has increased this demand. Fan-out(breakout of a harness) cabling Technology is widely deployed in 40G data centers which are in need of high data rate and higher port density. To understand better, fan-out technology is just like the water pipeline in a building. Water is transferred from the main trunk pipeline, and then it fans out to several pipelines that have small diameters to pump it to every house.

The superiority of fan-out technology can be brought into full throttle, especially in the distribution layer of the 40G data center. In this article, we will introduce many widely used fan-out/breakout assemblies used in 40G data centers.

40G MPO/MTP Fan-Out Cables

An MPO cable is a multi-fiber optical cable with several individual tight buffered optical fibers and its one end is terminated with male/female MPO connector and the other end is terminated with several LC connectors. Various MPO fan-out cables are available in the market nowadays. The most commonly used in 40G is the one which is able to fan out into 12 or 24 fiber with OM3 optical fiber as transmission media.  It is terminated with 6 duplex LC connectors on one end and a male MPO connector on the other end. This can work from MPO trunk backbone assemblies to LC fiber rack system in high-density backbone cabling from 40G device to 10G devices.

A little bit smaller MPO fan-out cable of which the fibers fan out directly from the MPO connectors is shown in the below figure. This mini MPO cable can be easily put into a patch panel and can increase the cabling density very effectively.

MPO cassette is another special type which is designed for those who love to have everything need and tidy. As the word “cassette” describes several mini sizes MPO fan-out cables are housed in a cassette which offers better cable protection and management. For example, a 12-fiber MPO cassette will have 12-fiber mini direct fan-out MPO cable inside the cassette. The given figure shows one MPO in the back side of the cassette and six duplex LC connectors in the front.

This type of cassette can be installed in the rack in the data center to achieve higher cable density. More 12-fiber mini MPO fan-out cables are installed for 40G transmission. Given figure shows a 24-fiber MPO cassette containing two 12-fiber fan-out cables. It can also have a mini size 24-fiber fan-out cable inside the cassette. Thus these MPO cassettes can be customized in CBO according to your requirements, no matter what is the fiber count and connector type used.

40G Direct attach Fan-out Cable

DAC Direct Attach Cable as a kind of optical transceiver assembly is also available in fan-out design. It is a high-speed cable with a transceiver on either end used to connect switches to routers or servers. The transceivers on both ends of DAC are not real optics, yet they perform similar functions as the real transceivers. DAC cables can be further categorized into direct attach copper cables and active optic fan-out cables.

However, converting from one to another form factor is necessary. An example can be a 40G device may be connected to one or several 10G devices for distribution. These pre-terminated components can also increase the reliability of a data center.

Conclusion

Fan-out technology has a major role in the 40G data center. 40G fan-out technology splits a single physical interface into multiple physical interfaces that are 410GbE capable. Thus, interface flexibility is increased at a lower cost.
